The Guise of the Good

[The curtain rises on A, standing stock still, at the end of the crosswalk, facing the street, staring off into space. B stands, also stock still, on the other side of the street, watching A. Long pause. A crosses the street, makes to pass B.]

B: What were you doing?

A: Trying to decide what to do.

B: How did it go?

A: What?

B: Deciding what to do.

[Long pause.]

A: [tentatively] Well, I’m going home.

B: [with alacrity] Nicely done!

[A looks askance at B, pauses, exits. B watches A go. The curtain falls.]
